He is responsible for the medical care for Olympians. An important part of his activity is screening for, and management of, medical conditions that limit the ability of athletes to participate in sports training and competition or may predispose them to sudden cardiac death. He is the Chairman of the Medical Commission of the Polish Olympic Committee and the Chief Medical Officer for the Polish Olympic Team; a member of the Advisory Board of the IOC Diploma in Sports Medicine; and a member of the Sports Cardiology Section of the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (EACPR). He was the Chairman of the Working Group on Sports Cardiology of the Polish Cardiac Society and a Member of the Board of the Polish Society of Sports Medicine. His main area of scientific activity is cardiac adaptation to exercise in athletes and the clinical approach to cardiac pathology and problems in athletes.

Similarities in the profile of cardiopulmonary exercise testing between patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and strength athletes.

D ifferentiating between young, athletic patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and elite athletes sometimes can be problematic. Left ventricular hypertrophy is seen mainly in athletes participating in endurance sports. A conflict exists with regard to strength athletes. Recent investigations suggest that strength athletes who use anabolic steroids have increased left ventricular hyper...

Recurrent repolarisation abnormalities in an athlete

Electrocardiographic changes due to regular physical exercise are well recognised and result from a combination of structural cardiac changes and increased vagal tone [1–6]. However, abnormalities on the athlete’s resting electrocardiogram (ECG) may be the first indication of an underlying electrical or structural cardiac disorder, and may precede symptoms and macroscopic structural abnormaliti...

Ethnic differences in left ventricular remodeling in highly-trained athletes relevance to differentiating physiologic left ventricular hypertrophy from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to evaluate ethnic differences in left ventricular (LV) remodeling between highly-trained athletes of African/Afro-Caribbean (black) and Caucasian (white) athletes. BACKGROUND The upper limits of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) are established in white athletes and aid the differentiation of physiologic LVH from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Ho...

Clinical Profile of Athletes With Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND The phenotype of individuals with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) who exercise regularly is unknown. This study characterized the clinical profile of young athletes with HCM. METHODS AND RESULTS The electrical, structural, and functional cardiac parameters from 106 young (14-35 years) athletes with HCM were compared with 101 sedentary HCM patients. A subset of athletes with HCM e...

Left ventricular hypertrophy in athletes.

Participation in regular intensive exercise is associated with a modest increase in left ventricular wall thickness (LVWT) and cavity size. The magnitude of these physiological changes is predominantly determined by a variety of demographic factors which include age, gender, size, ethnicity, and sporting discipline. A small minority of male athletes participating in sporting disciplines involvi...
